Delweld's Vignero, Smithmyer, Solarczyk take top awards
Delweld’s Zach Vignero and Andy Smithmyer each played major roles in their team’s capturing the AAABA League regular-season title.
On Thursday Delweld’s dynamic duo claimed the league’s top two awards after a vote by managers and officers at the Baker’s Loaf restaurant.
All-AAABA team/ Vignero earned the Dr. Robert Hartnett Most Valuable Player Award and Smithmyer claimed t he Pete Vuckovich Award that honors the year’s top pitcher.
Delweld third baseman Zach Solarczyk, 17, took the Ken Horoho Award as top rookie position player, and Martella’s Pharmacy hurler Travis Antolik was named the Bill Jenkins Award winner as the top rookie pitcher.
Vignero has been a veteran presence on a 23-12 team. The 20-year-old was a threat at the plate, on the mound and played every position except shortstop throughout the season. He batted a league-best .421 (40 for 95) with 10 doubles, one triple, one homer and 32 RBIs.
“Zach Vignero solidifies everything that we need to do,” Delweld manager Chris DelSignore said. “If we have an opening in our defensive lineup, he’s always willing and able to plug it. What he’s been able to do with the bat has been impressive. I think he only struck out nine times this year. He’s been the prototypical No. 4 hitter for us with 32 RBIs in 32 games.” To read complete story click here.
